Chase absolutely ADORES Elisabeth (she is his favorite Gymboree teacher) and he lit up when he saw her and couldn’t wait to show her his “cahs” and race them all over the house. When everyone was up again, we hung out at home, snacked on smoothies and watched some football until our wonderful babysitter Elisabeth arrived to watch Chase for the evening. Once I was done, we all headed off to Discovery Place Kids where we met up with my friends Carrie and Alexis and their families and spent the rest of the morning watching the little ones cause a ruckus and have a blast.īy the time we made it home, Chase was in need of a nap and the guys decided that sounded like a great idea, too! After lunch, while everyone took an afternoon rest, I showered, worked on blog stuff and caught up on my small group Bible study for Monday night. The baked oatmeal did a decent job of fueling me through my own workout after the guys returned. On Saturday morning, we started our day the sweaty way! Ryan and his dad took off for a father/son workout at the gym first thing in the morning while I got Chase dressed and ready for the day and whipped up a batch of peanut butter baked steel cut oatmeal for everyone for breakfast. Greg flew in town from Bradenton, Florida late Thursday morning and ever since he arrived we’ve filled our time with lots of good food, outside playtime at the park (it was in the 70s on Friday!), exploration and relaxation. But speak softly.įor more intoxicating info, visit thecellaratduckworths. This weekend was a celebratory one for the Fagan family! We had a very special 70th birthday to celebrate on Sunday and spent the weekend trying our best to make Ryan’s dad feel extra loved and special. Tell your friends of Ron and his almost-secret cellar. It’s meant to be discussed openly, this sanctuary where all are welcome. A refuge from the troubles and tribulations of the big city, The Cellar at Duckworth’s isn’t exclusive. Behind that imposing wooden door, in the heart of this brickwalled den, is a place where people can enjoy themselves. “Behind the stick I have the ability to create an infinite amount of flavors and really take people away from their worries and concerns for a while.” That’s the primary goal at Ron’s bar, as in any speakeasy. Somehow, Ron Oleksa’s folks had always thought he’d be a chef, but Ron, a self-professed lover of Charlotte’s ever-evolving cuisines, fell in love with the bar’s fundamental ability to comfort. He’s a proponent of the prevailing artistic elevation of the Charlotte cocktail, seeking to educate everyone’s palate on “the abundance of flavors and styles available.” Like the post-Prohibition, liberated mixologists of yesteryear, Ron Oleksa is reeducating the drinking public. “Every region does have it’s own unique palate,” stresses Ron, “and it is important to take that into account when creating a menu.” Luckily for Ron and the other beverage wizards in the city, Charlotte’s collective preference often welcomes guidance. Due to owner Rob Duckworth’s receptive and encouraging management, Ron is at liberty to craft whatever he thinks works, whatever the legions of Charlotte cocktail lovers need at any given time. Now, at The Cellar, Ron’s creativity runs into fewer limitations than ever. A job that was initially meant to help with school costs became a sort of schooling in itself: Ron started playing around with concoctions, and found that the bar afforded him a creativity he’d not yet encountered. at a young age, Ron was first exposed to cocktails during what was, at that time, a fledgling Charlotte mixology scene. Transplanted to the city from Washington, D.C. Ron Oleksa’s been behind your Charlotte bars for over 25 years. At the head of this rebirth is Head Mixologist Ron Oleksa, a man whose cocktail mastery also desperately needs to be talked about. The speakeasy concept seemingly died with the 21st Amendment, but The Cellar, hidden beneath Rob Duckworth’s newest in a line of taphouses, is resurrecting the secret-but-ostentatious, underground cocktail bar right here in the Queen City. These havens were secrets, not to be discussed, but their lavish exclusivity begged to be talked about. The “speakeasy” was so called because its existence had to be discussed softly, quietly, and rarely in public, so as not to alert neighbors or the authorities. Prohibition of alcoholic beverages, that most dire of American eras, fostered the most secluded of drinking spots. "_Hell's Threshold" Album: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Not very often, though it has happened before. Inholders often claim the USFS is doing all this to get them to sell. Frequently they file lawsuits against inholders for various petty violations. They will often shut down roads leading into private properties, sometimes to the point of denying access altogether. They constantly inspect their property line with inholders to point out encroachments, litter, and damaged fencing. However, they often describe the USFS as the “neighbor from Hell”. They love the beautiful scenery and the sounds of wildlife. They love knowing they can walk out of their front door and into Mother Nature. Most inholders will describe a love-hate relationship with the U.S. What Is It Like Living Next Door to a National Forest? You can also just Google, “inholdings for sale”. There are real estate professionals called, “land sales agents” that specialize in helping people buy inholdings. And based on the current state of politics and society, more people are leaving cities to find land further away. However, you can expect to pay a high price for an inholding because they are extremely popular. Land purchases go about the same as buying land anywhere else. There are no special rules for buying an inholding. This is why the inventory of available inholdings continues strong today. Forest Service often loses out in bidding wars due to the high price of land. However, inholders are not required to sell to the federal government. Forest Service today continues to buy up inholdings in an on-going effort to fill those holes. Moreover, many land owners recognized that owning land in a national forest would increase their property value, and thus dug their heels in and refused to sell. Forest Service had limited funds to buy up private properties, and thus left many “holes” in their forest boundaries. Government began drawing boundaries for national forests, they started the process of converting existing public lands into forests, as well as buying up adjacent private lands. Meanwhile, the National Forest system wasn’t created until 1891. “Inholders” are people who own an inholding.īefore there ever was national forest lands, these lands had originally been granted by the federal government to private owners through the Homestead Act of 1862. Forest Service rarely sells plots of its own land. You can buy land in just about any national forest. The pictures are in this book that invite the reader to step out of one’s comfort zone to SEE what the Bible has to offer. Find out whether the Doctrine of the Cross is right for you by answering 14 picture-questions: CAN YOU SEE THE CROSS?ĭid you ever think about the numbers in the Bible….why so many, and what they mean? Read the Forward. When you realize what has been visible for 2000 years, that Jesus tried to tell us, then you will SEE what Jesus tried to show us on the cross. After you see scripture on the cross 7 times, and then 25 times, and then 50 times, and then 250 times you will realize. What the Bible really says is spoken though the image of the cross so that a human can both SEE and hear the Word of God. Although the text of the Bible can be heard when read, unfortunately there are no pictures in the Bible to help explain the text….until now. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PROGRAMS IN PHILADELPHIA I've lived in Philadelphia with my sons for the last 26 years, still close to my childhood city park. For the last eight years, I've worked on management plans with parks in the New York metropolitan area including Gateway National Recreation Area, Statue of Liberty and African Burial Ground National Monuments and Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park. During those years, I lead some of the first partnership projects to link trails, parks and the health community and served on a special assignment as a project officer for Active Living by Design, a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, providing technical assistance and support to community partnerships throughout the country including Albuquerque, Buffalo, Chicago, and the Minneapolis region. I joined the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) and spent 15 years working with local government agencies, non-profit organizations and community groups in urban areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia to build coalitions and envision new trail and greenways systems. In 1990, I started at NPS as an outdoor recreation planner assisting park units and national heritage areas with a variety of planning projects. My mom, an avid national park traveler, frequently took us to historical sites in the region including Independence and Valley Forge National Historical Parks. I grew up in Philadelphia only a few minutes from a city park and spent much of my childhood with my siblings exploring the Wissahickon Valley, part of the city's great Fairmount Park system. All accounts are usually of elder false hydras, which are mainly mature for all purposes. Typical Physical Characteristics: False hydras, from all known accounts, are horrific beings appearing like that of a bloated white creature. In the same vein of logic, they do not inhabit areas that flood the earth too often, as that would drown them. For example, while sand is loose and easy to dig, false hydras would bake in the sun. However, this does not mean they will frequent places that have unstable ground either. Climate-wise, they are well protected by the earth in which they burrow, meaning it does not bother them much whatever goes on above the surface. They therefore cannot live in areas where burrowing is not possible, like earth made of stone and not loose loam. It's infantile and adult stages consist of hunting primarily, where it drags prey into the ground to devour them. Using these meat shields, it sits behind and lets them do the work instead.Įnvironment: The false hydra spends most of its life underground, hiding. Once they mature fully, they will be flanked by all the subjugated goons its song has entranced. However, they remain solitary, as their song cannot control people yet. If found, it is near helpless to defend itself save with its song, in hopes the enemy will forget it any move on.Īdult hydras have enough heads to pose a menace to a decent sized party. When in combat, it will only attack with 5 heads until it is absolutely certain that it's song won't work.Ī false hydra as an infant will often go about unnoticed. It prefers to have its enslaved underlings perform battle for it. The false hydra always sings with at least one head to try and put its enemies under its spell. Upon finally becoming an adult the false hydra's body has maximized it's absorption of food to prepare for growth, and has grown massive enough to gain max hp for each die. When a gargantuan false hydra has eaten 6 gargantuan, 12 huge, 24 large, 48 medium, 96 small, 192 tiny, 384 diminutive, 768 fine, or a combination of the above that adds up to 6 gargantuan creatures the false hydra grows it's 7th and final head.Ī false hydra can attack with each of it's heads every round at no penalty.
